The municipality of Saltvik, about 20 km north of Mariehamn is characterised by its blue mountains, golden fields, salty bays and sweet smelling flower meadows. It has ample wild animal and bird life, fresh air, clean water and beautiful lakes.
Kvarnbo Guest House is situated in the village of Kvarnbo in a quiet environment of natural beauty. 100 m from the house stands one of the oldest churches in Åland, dedicated to St. Mary, which is a medieval stone church whose oldest parts date back to the early 13th century.
Shop, post office and bank About 500 m from the guesthouse there is a well-assorted provincial shop with a post office and there is also a bank and a hairdresser’s in the village.
Beach You can go for a swim in the beautiful bay of Kvarnboviken about 300 m from the house. There is a sandy beach, changing rooms and a jetty. In the summer swimming schools are arranged for children of various ages.
Viking market In the last weekend of July each year a big and lively Viking market is held in the village. Here you can see how the Vikings used to live in the olden days, enjoy the food and drink of that time, take part in the games and go shopping in the numerous market stalls. The market is growing each year and last year it had as many as 8000 visitors.
Farm shop In the nearby village of Borgboda, about 2 km from Kvarnbo Guest House B&B there is a beautiful farm shop selling Åland handicraft and dried flowers (immortelles). In Borgboda there is also a small museum named Ida’s cottage and a Viking fortress.
Kastelholm castle In the neighbouring municipality of Sund there are the beautiful Kastelholms slott and Jan-Karlsgården with guided tours daily in the summer. In the same municipality you will also find the fortresses of Bomarsund, which recently celebrated its 150-year jubilee.
Golf For those interested in golf there is in Kastelholm, about five km from Kvarnbo Guest House B&B, a popular and very beautiful golf course with two complete 18-hole courses. There is also a restaurant and a golf shop connected to the golf course.

Next to Kvarnbo Gästhem there is an old workshop with working machines, some of them dated back to the end of the 19th century. The workshop is full of various car- and motorcycle projects. Martin will be pleased to take you on a tour.
